Program days2011-2012Orientation for Students and Parents Retreat (Mandatory) Education & Life Long Learning Business Government & History of Springfield Life 101 Leadership Development Business DayLearning Objective: To identify and understand the types of businesses in Springfield, have an understanding of the challenges faced by businesses in our economic region, and have knowledge of future labor market trends. Possible areas to explore: The success of planning the Program Day depends on BALANCE. Balance between the Learning Objectives as well as Current Affairs. Balance between lecture/discussion, and hands on learning. At the end of the program day, participants should have an understanding of, and be able to answer the following questions. How the information is presented and which individuals are involved in the presentations are up to the creativity of the planning team.
1. What types of businesses exist in Springfield? How do they interface? What resources or organizations promote business in Springfield (i.e. Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce)? 2. What are the major issues that companies must face in today's work environment? 3. What makes a business succeed beyond its competitors? 4. What can you do to prepare yourself to succeed in business? 5. Communication and etiquette in the business world (i.e., social networking, etc.)
Are there items of current interest that have not been addressed in the Learning Objective? Identify any current affairs and include them in program day planning. Education and Lifelong Learning

How do you research education opportunities? Where do you begin? 2. What are the educational opportunities available to you in Springfield? What types of education are available to students, from early childhood to adulthood? 3. What are particular advantages of the different types of education that are available? 4. What are the costs of education, and how are educational providers funded? 5. What opportunities exist to continue learning into adulthood (credit and non-credit)? 6. What challenges face institutions of higher education today and how are they dealing with those challenges? Current Affairs Are there items of current interest that have not been addressed in the Learning Objective? Identify any current affairs and include them in program day planning. Government/Law and History of SpringfieldLearning Objective: To understand the city and county government, law enforcement and the relationship between these entities, and how the history of the city impacts life in the present. Possible areas to explore: At the end of the program day, participants should have an understanding of, and be able to answer the following questions. How the information is presented and which individuals are involved in the presentations are up to the creativity of the planning team. Government/Law 1. How do City and County governments function? 3. In what ways do City and County governments cooperate? Where are they in conflict? In what areas are they working for additional cooperation? 4. What law enforcement agencies are present in the Springfield area, and how do they interface with the legal system? 5. How does our legal system function? What are the various jurisdictions and how are cases handled? What challenges do they currently face? History of Springfield 1. What significant developments have happened in the past, and what significant developments are planned for the future of Springfield? 2. What are some major milestones in the development of Springfield and how do they impact our lives today? Are there items of current interest that have not been addressed in the Learning Objective? Identify any current affairs and include them in program day planning. Life 101Learning Objective: To understand the issues that make your life better and your community better.
